AstroPix

(type of hard X-ray sensor)

AstroPix is a sensor design suitable for the hard X-ray to gamma-ray energy range. Specifically, it is a high-voltage CMOS (HVCMOS) monolithic active pixel sensor (HVMAPS). The technology promises to improve the capabilities of sensors in this regime, and a number of AstroPix versions have been developed, attempting to push designs toward its potential. The sensor design is useful for both ground-based particle-physics accelerators and for space gamma-ray and X-ray observatories. Some planned tests for the latter use are A-STEP (for AstroPix Sounding Rocket Technology Demonstrator Payload) and ComPair-2, a planned balloon-borne prototype for a proposed space observatory, AMEGO-X.

The name AstroPix has also been used for an unrelated effort that makes astronomy images available.
